Zoloft (Sertraline) is one of several antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs, which used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Though Zoloft is one of the most successful antidepressant medications, many Zoloft side effects have been reported and raised concerns about the safety of the drug.
Zoloft has been linked to a variety of dangerous side effects including:
Zoloft Side Effects in Newborns: Birth Defects
PPHN Researches showed that Zoloft used by pregnant women in the third trimester increases the risk that the child will develop the dangerous side effects of PPHN.
Heart Defect FDA has warned that use of certain antidepressants during the first trimester of pregnancy may be associated with an increased risk of heart birth defects.
Septal Defect A 2007 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found a “significant association” between Zoloft and septal defects, which can be life threatening.
Zoloft Side Effects in Teenagers:Suicide attempts & aggressive behaviors
Zoloft Side Effects in The Elderly:Zoloft withdrawal side effects & bone loss
Zoloft & Heart Defects
In a new study published in New England Journal of Medicine in 2007, it has been found that women who took sertraline (Zoloft) in the first few months of pregnancy had twice the risk of having a baby born with heart defect.
Zoloft & PPHN
A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2006 by Christina Chambers of the University of California, San Diego, found a sixfold increased risk of persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPH) in infants born to mothers who took an antidepressant in the last trimester of pregnancy.
Zoloft & Suicide Warning
On May 2, 2007, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed that makers of all antidepressant medications update the existing black box warning on their products' labeling to include warnings about increased risks of suicidal thinking and behavior, known as suicidality, in young adults ages 18 to 24 during initial treatment (generally the first one to two months).
Now, many people are investigating filing their own Zoloft lawsuit, alleging the company did not properly warn them about the risks associated with taking the antidepressant.
Settlements similar to the Zoloft lawsuit settlements average in excess of $1.5 Million US Dollars for each family that brings a lawsuit against the manufacturer for alleged heart defects and other side effects suffered by their children.

Zoloft should NEVER be given to a person who is bipolar. SSRI like Zoloft can make someone who is bipolar suicidal and/or more manic.

My 21 year old son was prescribed Zoloft a month ago, he has three times of suicidal attempts in this month. Has Zoloft been linked with this?

I have been taking Zoloft for about two months. The dry mouth and tiredness were really bothersome.
It’s the responsibility of the manufacturers by keeping telling people the effectiveness of Zoloft while ignoring the risk of taking this medicine. Doctors should also be responsible for the use of Zoloft which takes a black box warning on the bottle and getting the patients well-informed.
