The Relationship between Diet and Depression

Have you ever tried to ease your depression by a healthy diet? About one in 10 Americans over the age of 12 takes an antidepressant drug, according to a report from the CDC, and the number of Americans taking antidepressants has gone up over 400 percent since 1988. Depression and diet may be related. Some preliminary research suggests that having a poor diet can make you more vulnerable to depression.

There are things you can do to ease symptoms of depression. Exercise, changing your diet can improve your mood. There's a connection between mind and body. Although there is no specific diet that works for depression, a healthy diet can be part of an overall treatment plan. Build your diet around plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to help boost your physical and emotional health.

Eat a Diet High in Nutrients: Nutrients in foods support the body's repair, growth, and wellness. Nutrients we all need include vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, protein, and even a small amount of fat. A deficiency in any of these nutrients leads to our bodies not working at full capacity -- and can even cause illness.

For example, studies show that people who follow the Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes fruits, vegetables and fish, and limits meat and dairy products, have lower rates of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases.

Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin B12 may ease the mood changes that are part of depression. Fatty fish such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel contain omega-3 fatty acids. So do flaxseed, nuts, soybeans, and dark green vegetables. Seafood and low-fat dairy products are sources of B12.

However, depression is a multifactorial illness with many different causes that are unrelated, and unchangeable through diet. So, as always, consult a mental health professional if you are having signs of clinical depression.

Zoloft should NEVER be given to a person who is bipolar. SSRI like Zoloft can make someone who is bipolar suicidal and/or more manic.

My wife took Zoloft during her pregnancy with our first child. He had a hole in the heart and left us a week later.

My 21 year old son was prescribed Zoloft a month ago, he has three times of suicidal attempts in this month. Has Zoloft been linked with this?

I have been taking Zoloft for about two months. The dry mouth and tiredness were really bothersome.

It’s the responsibility of the manufacturers by keeping telling people the effectiveness of Zoloft while ignoring the risk of taking this medicine. Doctors should also be responsible for the use of Zoloft which takes a black box warning on the bottle and getting the patients well-informed.
